When Diana Anhalt was eight years old, her family moved from New York City to Mexico. As a long-time American resident of Mexico, I can so easily identify with Anhalt's imagery. She captures the sights and sounds and smells of Mexico so perfectly that one feels dropped into the poetry like a pebble into a puddle. Second Skin is amazingingly wonderul. Anhalt is very gifted. Each poem leaves one with an emotional attachment to that page. The sights, smells, and sounds of Mexico in the 50s is within your grasp on every page. One just doesn't want the book to be finished so quickly. The book experience touches the reader in many ways, all positive.
To read the poems of Second Skin is to plunge into a riot of bougainvillea, tortillas fresh off the comal, clanging church bells, alleys called Little Street of Bitterness. The slim, elegant book vividly evokes Mexico on a beautifully rendered landscape of nostalgia. Diana Anhalt, who moved to the country in 1950 with her McCarthy-fleeing parents and recently returned to the United States, could not resist Mexico's seductive pull its midnight serenatas, the street vendors singing of their wares, the markets overflowing with calla lilies, roses, carnations. Nor could she escape the smog of Mexico City, the legions of dead who always managed to cast their vote in election years, the severed heads of drug cartel victims. To live without fuschia, January's sun, Spanish,
smoke-spewing Popocatepetl, the night watchman's

Anhalt's strong craft combined with her insider/outsider relationship to her adopted country allow her to bring us fresh lines, as in her "Ode to Spanish"
So vowel happy, so full of yourself, so giddy on rhyme...
And to digress on the nature of belonging and change
Roots are hardy travelers, adaptable, they float
on water, cohere to wood...

of us to Mexico.

A masterful and marvelous collection of poetry capturing life in Mexico! i enjoyed this book enormously. So delicious you almost need a fork and knife. i highly recommend it.
A poet should use words to paint vignettes which awaken memories or emotions for the reader. Diana Anhalt does this beautifully in her poetry. As I read these poems, I was transported back to the places, people and things I lost when my family moved, when I was a child. And I remembered the wonderful places, people and things I discovered at our new home. She also lets us experience the sounds, sights and smells of Mexico. This is a delightful book.
